How do you find a WordPress page ID?

There are times when you might need to find the ID of a page or post you’ve created in the WordPress CMS. But it’s not immediately obvious how to find that ID number. If you’ve hit a brick wall, here’s how to find a WordPress page ID – it’s the same process for posts too!

What is a WordPress page ID?

Each page or post in WordPress gets a unique identifier, which you might be asked to enter into the CMS. For example, the theme for this site has what’s called Featured Modules, where we can manually select pages/posts that appear at the top of homepages. If we want to include or exclude certain posts, we may be asked for the ID number.

Where to find a WordPress page ID

There are a couple of ways to hunt down that elusive page or post ID.

The first is simply to open the editor for the relevant page or post in your web browser. When you’ve opened the post, look in the browser address bar. You may need to click your mouse cursor in the address bar to see the full URL, rather than the condensed URL shown in many browsers these days. You should see something like this:

The page ID is the number that appears after post=, as highlighted by the arrow above. Note that for either pages or posts, you’re looking for post=, there is no page=.

There is a slightly quicker way to get this number if you’re using Google Chrome or a Chromium-based browser such as Edge or Vivaldi.

On your page or posts menu, hover the mouse over a page or post title, such as ‘Why is Spatial Audio not working on my iPhone?’ below.

Now look down to the bottom of the browser window and you should see a preview of the URL that you’re about to click. That will contain the post or page ID.

Unless you’ve got tens of thousands of posts/pages on your site, the ID should be fairly easy to remember.
